Why Choose a Subspecialist for Cataract Surgery?

Not all cataract surgery is straightforward. Eyes with previous LASIK or PRK, dense or hypermature cataracts, pseudoexfoliation syndrome, shallow anterior chambers, corneal disease, or a history of retinal surgery all carry higher surgical risk and require specific technical experience.

A subspecialist with fellowship training in complex cataract surgery has managed these cases as a core part of their training, not as occasional exceptions. For patients with complicating factors, choosing a surgeon with documented complex cataract experience reduces risk and improves the likelihood of achieving the target visual outcome.

For patients with routine cataracts, the same subspecialist skill set applies to achieving the most accurate lens implant power calculation and the best possible refractive outcome. Our comprehensive cataract surgery guide covers what to expect from assessment through to recovery.

Premium Lens Implants for Northern Suburbs Patients

Northern Eye Consultants offers the full range of intraocular lens options including standard monofocal lenses, toric lenses for astigmatism correction, extended depth of focus lenses, and trifocal lenses. Lens selection is based on your eye measurements, corneal health, macular status, and visual goals.

Not every premium lens is appropriate for every eye. Your surgeon will give you a specific recommendation at your consultation rather than a generic list of options. For a full overview of lens types, see the intraocular lens options guide at corneaeyedoctor.com.

Standard Monofocal IOL

Medicare-listed lens. Corrects distance vision; reading glasses required for near tasks. Suitable for most patients.

Toric IOL

Corrects pre-existing astigmatism at the time of surgery. Substantially reduces post-operative astigmatism for suitable candidates.

Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF)

Provides a continuous range of vision from distance to intermediate. Fewer halos than multifocal designs. Well suited to computer users and drivers.

Trifocal IOL

Provides vision at distance, intermediate, and near. Maximises glasses independence for carefully selected patients with healthy eyes.

Subspecialty Services Available at the Same Practice

One of the advantages of a large subspecialist practice is that patients with more than one eye condition can be managed by the appropriate specialist at the same location. At Northern Eye Consultants, patients have access to medical retina and intravitreal injection therapy, glaucoma surgery and laser, corneal transplantation, oculoplastic surgery, and paediatric ophthalmology, all at Northpark Private Hospital, Bundoora.

This is particularly relevant for patients with cataract and co-existing conditions such as Fuchs endothelial dystrophy, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, or glaucoma, where the cataract surgeon and subspecialist can coordinate planning at the same site.

How to Refer a Patient for Cataract Surgery

GPs and optometrists can refer patients to Northern Eye Consultants for cataract assessment and surgery. Please address referrals to Dr Ross MacIntyre or the Northern Eye Consultants cataract team. Urgent referrals for rapidly progressive or complicated cataracts can be flagged as urgent in the referral letter.

For complex cataract cases including eyes with previous corneal surgery, pseudoexfoliation, or planned combined procedures, please specify the complexity in the referral so the appropriate surgical planning time can be allocated.
